The Mississippi Land Trust
, is a charitable, 501(c)(3) organization that works with private, willing landowners
to find ways to preserve Mississippi’s rich history, prairies, red clay hills, bottomlands
and bayous, coastal savannas, longleaf pine forests, and scenic rivers and streams.
Its primary tool for land conservation is a conservation easement, an alternative
to selling the land for development. A conservation easement will allow a landowner
to retain ownership of the land, protect important environmental or historical assets
from future development, and obtain certain tax advantages.
The Mississippi River Trust
is also a charitable, 501(c)(3) organization. It works in the same way as the Mississippi
Land Trust. But instead of operating within the borders of Mississippi, it secures
conservation easements with willing landowners throughout the Mississippi River
Valley, primarily within the six states that border the lower Mississippi.
In addition, Wildlife Mississippi works with a broad range of other conservation
partners.
